How Often Should Men Get a Haircut? | Crate Collective

There's no single answer.

Some men like their haircut looking sharp and freshly faded all the time, while others prefer a more natural, grown-out appearance.

Your ideal haircut schedule depends on your hairstyle, hair growth, hair type and personal preference. Here's our guide to knowing when it's time to visit your barber.

How Often Should You Get a Fade?

If you have a skin fade, you may notice the difference relatively quickly as your hair grows.

For a consistently sharp appearance, many clients choose to visit their barber around every 2–3 weeks.

If you're happy with a slightly softer look, you may be able to leave it closer to four weeks.

How Often Should You Get a Taper?

Tapers are generally more forgiving as they grow out.

A low taper or classic taper can often look good for 3–4 weeks, depending on your preferred finish.

If you want that freshly detailed appearance around the ears and neckline, more frequent visits will keep it looking sharper.

How Often Should You Get a Buzz Cut?

Buzz cuts are simple but can show growth quickly because the overall length is so short.

Many people maintain a buzz cut every 2–4 weeks.

The shorter you wear it, the more frequently you'll usually want it maintained.

What About Longer Hairstyles?

If you're growing your hair or wearing a longer style, you don't necessarily need a full haircut every few weeks.

Instead, you might visit your barber every 6–8 weeks for a tidy-up.

This can help remove damaged ends, maintain your shape and keep the style looking intentional while allowing your hair to grow.

What About Your Beard?

Don't forget your beard.

A haircut can look fantastic, but an overgrown neckline or untidy beard can change the entire appearance.

Many clients choose to have their beard shaped or trimmed alongside their haircut.

Signs It's Time for a Haircut

Not sure whether you need one?

Look out for:

  • Your fade has lost its definition

  • Hair is starting to cover your ears

  • Your neckline is becoming untidy

  • Your hairstyle is difficult to control

  • Your hair no longer sits correctly

  • Your fringe is getting in the way

  • Your beard needs shaping

If you're thinking about booking a haircut, it's probably time.

How to Keep Your Haircut Looking Fresh Between appointments:

  • Use the right styling products

  • Wash your hair appropriately

  • Don't overload your hair with product

  • Keep your neckline tidy

  • Follow your barber's styling advice

  • Book your next appointment before your current haircut grows out

Find Your Regular Barber

A good barber will get to know your hair over time.

They'll understand how quickly it grows, where your hair naturally falls and what styles work for you.

At Crate Collective, we're about building that relationship rather than simply giving you a haircut and sending you on your way.
